BMW Vision Neue Klasse X: How Munich Plans to Take on Tesla in 2026

In BMW's storied history, few terms carry as much weight as 'Neue Klasse'. The original 1962 Neue Klasse sedans rescued the Bavarian brand from financial ruin and birthed the modern sports sedan. Sixty-four years later, BMW is betting its entire future on a brand-new Neue Klasse architecture, starting with the next-generation iX3 electric SAV.
We toured BMW's Research and Innovation Centre (FIZ) in Munich to explore the production-ready technologies debuting in the Neue Klasse platform.
Gen6 eDrive: Round Cells and 800V Architecture
The cornerstone of Neue Klasse is BMW's sixth-generation eDrive technology, which transitions from prismatic cells to cylindrical round cells with a 46mm diameter:
- Energy Density: +20% volumetric energy density compared to current Gen5 cells.
- Charging Speed: 30% faster charging, adding 300 km of range in just 10 minutes.
- Range: Over 800 km WLTP on flagship battery variants.

Four 'Super-Brains' Central Computing
BMW has discarded dozens of distributed electronic control units (ECUs) in favor of four high-performance central computers known as 'super-brains'. One super-brain handles the entire powertrain and driving dynamics stack with ten times the computing power of current BMW systems.
Inside, the revolutionary BMW Panoramic Vision projects key driving metrics and infotainment across the entire width of the lower windscreen, eliminating conventional dashboard clutter while maintaining focus on the road.
With production commencing at the carbon-neutral Debrecen plant in Hungary, the Neue Klasse iX3 will be the benchmark that determines BMW's leadership in the electric era.
